1. Songwriter's Roundtable

Join for a songwriters roundtable, where members critique and provide feedback on each other's songs.

The roundtable will be hosted by songwriter/producer Neel Modi at The Central, a Toronto hot spot for musicians, artists and poets in the Bloor / Bathurst area of downtown Toronto, right next to Honest Ed's in the heart of Mirvish Village. 

The Central is graciously giving our group the big room upstairs to hold our roundtable.

Date: Wednesday, April 16th, 2014

Time: 6:00pm to 9:00pm

Cost: FREE but please order a drink and/or meal to support the venue

Location: The Central, 603 Markham Street (about one and a half blocks southwest of the Bathurst station on the Bloor-Danforth subway line). Second floor.

2. Self-producing: The Basics

If you want to do a show but have never produced professionally before most likely you will need to know what questions to ask first, this session is for you! This is a practical seminar is facilitated by Mairin Smit, Program Coordinator along with a Guest Producer.

This workshop is designed for individuals thinking of producing a show or starting a theatre company, and gives you the opportunity to learn and organize your thinking and planning; work on scheduling and budget considerations; and find out more about availabel resources and services.

There is a $5 material fee for members and non-members.

3. Start Writing: Open House

Experienced or beginner, this workshop allows the participants to get to know the Amherst Writers and Artists method, take part in some short writing exercises (bring a pen and notebook), check out the workshop space, ask any questions you might have about your work or writing in general, decide if Start Writing workshops are a good fit for you and your writing without committing to a full schedule of courses. Open House sessions are limited to 12 participants.

4. Storyboarding (Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto)

This workshop covers the basic components that make up the visualization of a screenplay. Learn the principles of concept and design illustration, continuity sketches and storyboards, the line of axis, the illustration of camera techniques, shot flow, mood and character. The participants will have the opportunity to practice basic drawings skills and view sample storyboards alongside their actual filmed sequences. Drawing skills are not required.

Participants must bring the following materials to the workshop: blank paper, pencil and eraser.

Thursday April 24 2014 from 6:00-10:00pm

5. Feature Film Writing (Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto)

Writing the feature film is like climbing a mountain—you can do it alone, but it’s easier and just as satisfying with some support. These two evenings will bring you together with story editor and instructor Maureen Dorey and writers in the same position to discuss principles of dramatic writing, craft and content and how they apply to your screenplay. We’ll unpack tools to help you access character, story, event and meaning. The hope is that you would gain more insight into the process and confidence in your approach as you move forward to scale the mountain.
