Yes It Is! The Toronto Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival is Back

by Kristen 23rd July 2014

It's that time of year! Caribana (now called the Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival due to a change in management) is hitting the city streets once again.

It's time for colourful costumes, energetic music, dance and much more. Deemed North America's largest street festival, the Caribbean Carnival brings in over 1.3 million visitors each year for the parade alone and 2 million overall.

This enormous display of Caribbean heritage was introduced in 1967 by immigrants from Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Antigua and Jamaica and was re-branded in 2011. While the official launch and opening of the two-week event was held on July 8th, we are getting closer to the climax – the Grand Parade – which is the most sought-after event in the celebration's schedule.

If you're planning on heading downtown, get ready to get down to Steel Pan, Soca and Calypso music. Here's a brief schedule of events leading up to and coming after the big show:

Festival Gala July 25th, 2014

King & Queen – Competition & Show – July 31st, 2014

Jab Jab J'Ouvert – August 1st, 2014

Grand Parade – August 2nd, 2014

Summer Slam 2014 – August 2nd, 2014

Carnival Island – August 3rd, 2014

Bring your water, camera and energy because, for the next two weeks, the Toronto Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival is bringing the heat of the Islands to the city in more ways than one!
