by Kristen 17th September 2014

Fall is the season for literary events in Toronto. Don’t miss out on some of the most energetic author readings, workshops and presentations mixed with delicious food and drink at some of the hottest venues. Below are 4 of the biggest celebrations of literature in the city. Check it out.

Descant Launches the Berlin Project

When: September 19, 2014 from 7pm to 10pm

Where: Goethe-Institut Toronto, 100 University Avenue, #201

Presented by Descant together with the Goethe-Institut Toronto, this fête will celebrate the launch of their 166th issue surrounding Germany’s energetic capital. Descant is a quarterly literary journal that showcases poetry, prose, essay, memoir and art. The event will be full of excerpt readings, delicious drinks, food and friends from all literary corners of Toronto. For a sneak preview of the issue, click here and come enjoy the party. Admission is free and costumes are highly encouraged!

Word On The Street

When: September 21, 2014 from 11am to 6pm

Where: Queen’s Park Circle

The Word on the Street together with a host of sponsors, authors and hundreds of volunteers will be coming together to celebrate Canadian reading and writing. They’ll be championing literacy through hundreds of author events, presentations and workshops, giving you the chance to stroll through Canada's vast literary scene and everything it has to offer. Bring the whole family—even the dog as it’s completely outside. Admission is free. Check out more information at the WOTS website.

10 Things Nobody Told You About Freelance Writing

When: September 27, 2014 at 10am

Where: Metro Hall, Room 308

The Professional Writers Association of Canada (PWAC) will be taking part in Culture Days 2014 through an engaging panel discussion with guest speakers Corbin Smith (award-winning photographer), Suzanne Bowness (PWAC Executive Board Member), Stacie Marie Robinson (publisher and author), Jennifer Foster (freelance writer and editor) and Camille Dundas (news writer). These publishing professionals will be giving tips about what they've learned on the job versus what they learned in the classroom. For a preview and more information, check out the website.

International Festival of Authors

When: Month of October 2014

Where: Harbourfront Centre

A non-profit organization since 1986, the IFOA has a mandate to cultivate and advance the cause of literature. It does this through its weekly event series, the annual International Festival of Authors in October and, for young readers, YoungIFOA, ALOUD and the Forest of Reading Festival of Trees in May. The Festival offers readings, round table discussions, interviews and performances involving authors from more than 100 countries. For more information on upcoming events, check out their event navigator.

The Fall season is a busy time for publishing professionals and the launch of The Berlin Project by Descant, Word on the Street, PWAC’s 10 Things Nobody Told You About Freelance Writing and the IFOA are some of the biggest literary events happening in Toronto. Whether you’re a writer, publisher, or book-lover, let your favorite authors keep you warm as the temperature starts to fall.
